Thames Water

“The introduction of Mental Health First Aiders has led to a cultural revolution across Thames Water.”

The Mainly Mental Health Company has worked with Thames Water for nearly 10 years to support their Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy by providing Resilience, Mental Health First Aid and Mental Health Awareness (Mindfit) Training to over 5000 Thames Water employees so far. This has resulted in a 75% reduction in absence due to mental ill health. Thames Water records 5 x more mental health first aid interventions than physical first aid.

Karl Simons, Chief Health, Safety and Security Officer said: “Across the organisation, we were experiencing more occupational health referrals for stress, anxiety and depression than we were for physical illnesses. Many of our employees work shift patterns or are lone workers and the nature of the work can be in high risk, demanding environments, such as navigating confined entries into deep sewers. Therefore, we implemented a new ‘Time to Talk’ mental health strategy to ensure we cared for our employees’ mental health as well as their physical health. Embedding Mental Health First Aiders into the organisation was a core part of this strategy from the very start.”

MHFA England includes the work that MMH has done with TW on their website in recognition of the impact the training has had.

The MMH team worked with Virgin Atlantic Airways over several years and has trained over 2000 crew and pilots in stress management, MHFA and Pilot’s Awareness Training.

We started working with Jane and the Mainly Mental Health team, in July 2018. Our ambition was to have 1 in every 5 of our crew community trained as a Mental Health First Aider. 2 years later, not only have we reached that goal, but we a thriving and highly visible MHFA community.
