Mental Health First Aider

Delivered over 2 days in the classroom or 4 live sessions online, this course not only certifies delegates as MHFAiders®, but provides 3 year membership of MHFA England, access to the MHFAider® Support App and Ongoing CPD via the Online Learning Hub.

MHFAiders® will be able to:

  • Recognise those that may be experiencing poor mental health and provide them with first-level support and early intervention
  • Encourage a person to identify and access sources of professional help and other supports
  • Practise active listening and empathy
  • Have a conversation with improved mental health literacy around language and stigma
  • Discuss the MHFAider® role in depth, including boundaries and confidentiality
  • Practise self-care
  • Know how to use the MHFAider Support App®
  • Know how to access a dedicated text service provided by Shout and ongoing learning opportunities with MHFA England

We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn.

Through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions, each session is built around a Mental Health First Aid action plan. The sessions can be tailored slightly to allow for specific company focus and to include company specific information, case studies and support options.

All learners who complete the course will get:

  • A hard copy workbook to support their learning throughout the course
  • A digital manual to refer to whenever they need it​ after completing the course
  • A wallet-sized reference card with the Mental Health First Aid action plan​
  • A digital MHFAider® certificate
  • Access to the MHFAider Support App® for three years

MHFA Workplace Champion

Delivered over 1 day in the classroom or 2 x half day sessions online, this intensive, case study focussed programme provides delegates with:

  • An understanding of common mental health issues
  • Knowledge and confidence to advocate for mental health awareness
  • Ability to spot signs of mental ill health
  • Skills to support positive well-being

We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn.

Through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions, each session is built around a Mental Health First Aid action plan. All delegates will receive the MHFA Champion course manual, workbook and plastic action plan.

The sessions can be tailored slightly to allow for specific company focus and to include company specific information, case studies and support options.

Session 1

Session 2

Mental Health Aware

Delivered over 4 hours in the classroom or online, this introductory session aims to raise awareness of mental health. Easily adaptable for manager or specific group training, it is designed to give:

  • An understanding of what mental health is and how to challenge stigma
  • A basic knowledge of some common mental health issues
  • An introduction to looking after your own mental health and maintaining well-being
  • Confidence to support someone in distress or who may be experiencing a mental health related issue.

We limit numbers to 25 in the classroom and 16 online so that the Instructor can keep delegates safe and supported while they learn.

Learning takes place through a mix of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities. All delegates will receive the Mental Health Aware manual and workbook.

The sessions can be tailored slightly to allow for specific company focus and to include company specific information, case studies and support options.

The session covers:

  • What is mental health?
  • Factors which affect mental health (including stigma)
  • Stress and stress management
  • Spotting signs of distress
  • Overview of common mental health diagnoses
  • Recovery
  • Take 10 Together kit – starting a supportive conversation
  • Supporting mental health in the workplace

MHFA Refresher

MHFA England requires MHFAiders to refresh their learning at least every 3 years. Delivered over 4 hours in the classroom or online, this session will:

  • Refresh the skills needed to be a MHFAider
  • Update knowledge of mental health and supports
  • Provide an opportunity to practice applying the MHFA Action Plan
  • Provide membership of MHFA England for 3 years, access to the MHFAider® App and ongoing CPD via the Online Learning Hub.

We limit numbers to 25 in the classroom and 16 online so that the Instructor can keep delegates safe and supported while they learn.

Learning takes place through a combination of presentation, group activities and film clips. All delegates will receive the MHFA Refresher manual and workbook.

The sessions can be tailored slightly to allow for specific company focus and to include company specific information, case studies and support options.

The session covers:

  • Reminders of key concepts introduced in MHFA Training
  • Re-introducing ALGEE
  • Refreshing knowledge of warning signs and mental health conditions
  • Crisis First Aid for Suicide
  • Practicing MHFA skills
  • Self-care, wellbeing and recovery
